When Joel Reignier walked into a parking lot at the base of New Hampshire'S White Mountains,the people gathered there couldn’t believe their eyes.Hours earlier on the mountain Joel had been swallowed by an avalanche(9 1 No one expected to see him alive.But Joel survived the avalanche and 1ived to tell the tale.Rescue workers say it was amiracle,but Joel Reignier says,“1 was just lucky.”
Joel and his friend Luc Parent were both experienced hikers and mountain climbers.Joel grew up in the French Alps.He and Luc had hiked the White Mountains many times。and this hike began like any other.They had set out in good spirits,j oking that the snack bars they had packed for energy were called Avalanche.It began as a routine Sunday hike,but suddenly Joel and Luc realized that something had changed.“It was getting dark.Thewind began to blow really hard,and we were sinking up to our waists in the snow,’’Joelsays.Then,as Luc watched in horror,he saw his friend disappear down the mountain ina rush of snow.“1 was pulling myself up with my ice ax,and I put my foot in the wrongplace,”remembers Joel.“All of a sudden I began to fall.I thought‘This can’t behappening.’1 was sure 1 was going to die.”Luc remembers too.‘‘I heard a scream andsaw Joel falling down the mountain.He slid right by me.Then he disappeared.’’Lucshakes as he recalls the incident.“I called him,but he didn’t answer.I didn’t think hewould survive.’’
Joel was carried by the snow 1 50 feet down the mountain.Although the fall took onlvseconds,it felt like hours.When he landed,Joel was buried up to his chin in snow.“Icouldn’t breathe.There was snow in my mouth,SO I spit it out,”He says.“1 was stuckand I didn’t know what to do.I only knew that snow could freeze me in a few minutes.
