薩克雷(William Makepeace Thackeray,1811-1863),英國小說家。父親是東印度公司的稅務(wù)員兼行政官,薩克雷出生于印度的加爾各答,四歲時(shí)父親辭世,薩克雷隨之被送回英國受教育。后入劍橋大學(xué),一面寫作詩歌,同時(shí)熱衷于賭博,在歐陸各國過著放浪形骸的生活。在德國游學(xué)期間結(jié)識(shí)了大作家沃爾夫?qū)じ璧拢⒃欢戎涟屠韫プx美術(shù)。薩克雷用其父的遺產(chǎn)做投資雜志及銀行代理,均告失敗。薩克雷自1833年起即用筆名在報(bào)刊發(fā)表文章,也出了幾本書,但直至寫出長篇小說《名利場》,才被世人公認(rèn)為與同時(shí)代的狄更斯齊名的天才作家。除寫作小說外,他的散文也獨(dú)樹一幟,《巴黎小品集》、《愛爾蘭小品集》、《勢利眼集》,亦文筆雋永,為廣大讀者所喜愛。
