本書在第四版的基礎(chǔ)上修訂。本次修訂主要調(diào)整了一些篇目，使經(jīng)典作品更加突出；重寫部分單元的介紹，使全書風(fēng)格更加統(tǒng)一；整體篇幅稍有壓縮，使本書作為教材更加精簡實用，從而進(jìn)一步貼近英美文學(xué)課程教學(xué)需要，以語言交際和應(yīng)用為主要內(nèi)容，真正培養(yǎng)學(xué)生語言應(yīng)用能力。
本書遴選內(nèi)容多是大學(xué)生熟悉的英美文學(xué)作品，注重經(jīng)典性的同時，注重語言的規(guī)范和時代感。內(nèi)容上以切近年輕人關(guān)注的話題為主，所選文章力求做到語言精美，內(nèi)容引人入勝。同時注重課程思政內(nèi)容的融入，潤物細(xì)無聲地培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的民族自豪感和文化自信。
