This textbook is compiled based on the Chinese current code Standard of steel structure design (GB 50017-2017) focused on the basic principle of steel structure design. It introduced the basic principles of steel structure design in civil engineering constructions. The book illustrated the material property, the connections and the basic components of the steel structures. It also introduced the failure modes and the calculation method of the steel structures as well as the seismic performance ofjoints and components. It's content highlighted the principles and focuses on fostering ability for analyzing and solving problems.
This book can be used as the professional basic course material of civil engineering. It can also be used as a reference book for those who are engaged in overseas steel structure engineering design and for construction engineers and technicians.
With the rapid development of Chinese-foreign cooperation program of civil engineering( including international students and Chinese students) ,new requirements for the steel structure teaching are put forward, this the author compiled two textbooks Basic Principles of Steel Structures Design and Design, of Steel Building Structures in English. Basic Principles of Steel Structures design, compiled in accordance with the current Chinese code Standard for design of steel structures (GB 50017-2017). It is used as an English teaching material for civil engineering majors in colleges and universities.
This book consists of 9 Chapters. The content of Chapter 1 includes the introduction, characteristics, application scope, development and classification of steel structures. Chapter 2 discusses material properties of steel structures, including mechanical properties of structural steel and its influencing factors, and the types and choices of steel and section steel. In Chapter 3, several possible failure modes of steel structures and their characteristics are illustrated. Chapter 4 introduces the basic methods of the steel structures design. Chapter 5 introduces connection types of steel structures, focusing on the calculation and construction requirements of welded connections and bolted connections. Chapter 6 introduces the behavior of the axially loaded component, describing the section strength, stiffness, overall stability and local stability calculation. Additionally, the design method of the axially loaded component is also illustrated in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 introduces the behavior of flexural member, focusing on section strength, stiffness, overall stability calculation, local stability design and stiffener design. Chapter 8 introduces the behavior of compression-flexural and tension-flexural members, focusing on section strength and stiffness calculation. The overall stability and local stability calculation of compression-flexural members are also illustrated. Chapter 9 briefly introduces the seismic performance of steel members and steel structure joints.
