《大學英語》依據(jù)《成人高等教育學士學位英語水平考試大綱（非英語專業(yè)）》，參照國內(nèi)同類教材，針對成人高校學生學習特點編寫而成，主要用作各類成人高校專升本各專業(yè)的基礎(chǔ)英教材。編寫本教材的指導思想是：培養(yǎng)學生掌握扎實的英語基礎(chǔ)知識，具備較強的閱讀理解翻譯和寫作的能力，順利通過成人高等教育學士學位英語水平考試。
本教材共24單元，每單元分為A、B兩部分：A部分包括課文、生詞、短語、注釋練習；B部分是借鑒學士學位英語水平考試題型設(shè)計的專項練習與實踐。課文是教材的核心與學習重點。文章全部出自英文報刊、雜志和書籍。內(nèi)容涉及人文歷史、科普教育、社會問題、生活習慣等題材。語言規(guī)范，長度、難度適宜，內(nèi)容安排上循序漸進。
