Teaching suggestions1 ;;The patterns provided in this section of each unit are most frequently
;;;;;used in daily life in regard to their respective functions. It's likely that
;;;;;many students are already familiar with some of the expressions while
;;;;;others may know only a few. Remind the students that they are supposed
;;;;;to learn both the "starters" and the '~responses" in order to carry on
;;;;;a conversation. The words in italics in the following form are to be
;;;;;replaced with the students' specific information.2 ;;Since this is the first class, there will be some kind of self-introduction
;;;;;going on in class. Encouraging one or two students to introduce
;;;;;themselves to the class may help liven up the classroom atmosphere.
;;;;;Spend 3 to 5 minutes to do the activity. With the clues listed below, the
;;;;;teacher could start off the first session by inviting a few students to give
;;;;;a brief introduction of themselves and/or their families.Teaching suggestions1 ;Lead the students to read the Word bank:
;;;;;~ retired: adj. used to describe people who have stopped wo,
;;;;;;;;usually because they have reached a certain age --,v. retire
;;;;;;;;;;e.g. Both his parents are retired now.
;;;;;~ housewife: n. a married woman who works at home doing the
;;;;;;;;co, cleaning, etc, but does not have a job outside the house
;;;;;;;;;;e.g. His father was a doctor, his mother a housewife,
;
2 ;;Before playing the recording, lead and encourage the students to discuss
;;;;;and anticipate what an introduction to one's family includes:
;;;;;~ the person's name, perhaps age;
;;;;;~ the other members living in the same family, usually parents;~ information concerning the family members' jobs or professions,
;;;where they work, their interests and hobbies, etc.Anticipation will help the students focuetter on what they are going tohear.Play the recording for the first time, and ask the students to do exerciseA. Then let the students compare their choices without doing the classche.Play the recording again, and ask the students to do exercise B.Check the answers together, and offer some brief explanation wherenecessary. If a statement is false, discuss with the students why it isfalse, and ask them to correct it.Check for the specific information. When both exercises are done, theteacher may check to see if some students could recall the specificinformation in the recording by a the following questions:~ What is Li Min's grandpa? (A retired doctor)~ What is her grandma? (,4 housewife.)~ How old are they'? (Over 70.)~ What does her father teach? (Math.)~ Where does her mother work? (In a local hospital.)W: Hi, my name is Li Min, and I'm eighteen. I'm a first-year college
;;;;student. I'm going to tell you something about my family. There are
;;;;five people in my family: my grandparents, my morn, my dad and
;;;;I. My grandpa is a retired doctor, and my grandma is a housewife.
;;;;They are both over 70. My mom works as a nurse in a local hospital.
;;;;My dad's a teacher. He teaches in a high school. He teaches math.
