隱喻的研究從古希臘時(shí)代開(kāi)始就引起眾多學(xué)者的注意。亞里士多德將隱喻定義為“把屬于一事物的詞用到另一事物上”。古典傳統(tǒng)修辭學(xué)認(rèn)為隱喻是一種語(yǔ)言的“偏離”或“寄生”現(xiàn)象,獨(dú)立于人類認(rèn)知系統(tǒng)之外;其本質(zhì)是對(duì)語(yǔ)言的“裝飾”功能。因此,隱喻研究長(zhǎng)期停留在語(yǔ)言修辭的層面,處于邊緣化狀態(tài)。隨著20世紀(jì)80年代認(rèn)知語(yǔ)言學(xué)的崛起,人類開(kāi)始探索體驗(yàn)性認(rèn)知在語(yǔ)言的形成、發(fā)展和使用過(guò)程中所起的主導(dǎo)作用。倘若我們說(shuō)認(rèn)知語(yǔ)言學(xué)是研究語(yǔ)言上的特征如何反映人類對(duì)客觀世界的認(rèn)知,那么隱喻則為我們提供了闡明這一關(guān)系的生動(dòng)實(shí)例!段覀兯囈陨娴碾[喻》一書的出版,標(biāo)志著認(rèn)知隱喻理論的誕生,隱喻不再僅局限于一種話語(yǔ)現(xiàn)象,而是被提升到認(rèn)知的層次。隱喻研究從此有了質(zhì)的突破,進(jìn)入了跨學(xué)科、跨領(lǐng)域的時(shí)代。
