本書是后世研究英國古跡建筑的重要資料，不僅用文字記述了建筑的歷史變遷，并且用366張繪制極為精美的圖版，全面展示了建筑形制上的特點，以及獨特的藝術(shù)與文化特征。約翰·布里頓在1805-1814年編撰了9卷本的《英國建筑古跡》一書，涉及了英國當(dāng)時現(xiàn)存的古跡建筑共計60余處，囊括了教堂、城堡，以及其他反映英國古代建筑藝術(shù)成就的代表性建筑。在1814-1835年又編撰了14卷本的《英格蘭大教堂》，詳細(xì)描述14處英國歷史上最具代表性的天主教堂，另附大約300張圖版，呈現(xiàn)了每座教堂的建筑形制與基本風(fēng)貌，對代表性的細(xì)節(jié)特點亦做了深入刻畫。每座教堂歷任主教的在位時間，亦有詳表說明，這對人們深入了解每座教堂背后的歷史有極大的幫助。
現(xiàn)將《英國建筑古跡》（The Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain）與《英格蘭大教堂》（Cathedral Antiquities of England）合編為《英國建筑古跡兩種》（六卷本），據(jù)英文原版影印出版。
